Cooking Up Some Fun!

The Williamson Farmer’s Market is slicing up some fun with their popular Jr. Chef Cooking Class! On February 11th, the team is hosting “Pizza with Pizazz”! During the class, kids will learn to make their own heart shaped, personal size pizzas!

Fun with a Purpose

Williamson Farmers Market Marketing and Nutrition Manager Kristen DeBoard says they noticed a need for something to do, nutrition education, and life skills families can use together.

“With Jr. Chef classes, we can address these needs and throw in opportunities to work with the parents also,” says Kristen.

All classes have enjoyed positive feedback from both the Jr. Chefs and parents. Kristen says they have had several repeat participants and they always have new faces at each class. The Williamson Farmers Market staff working the classes say the kids tell them they learn at least one new skill during class. The parents tell the staff they are happy to have events like this locally, so they don’t have to travel out of town. Another plus noted by parents is that the classes are affordable. The “Pizza with Pizazz” class is $10.00. This includes all ingredients and the kids take home their own pizza pan.

Kristen says, “Typically, we do limit the amount of Jr. Chefs in each class. We don’t want to overcrowd because we like to be hands-on and give each child individual attention.”

Up Next

The February class is full, with 18 enrolled, but the next class is already being planned. The March Jr. Chef will have a fun Mardi Gras theme! It will be hosted at ABLE Families in Kermit, West Virginia on March 5th during their after-school program. It is open to the public. The class will cook a healthy version of “King Cake”, gain nutritional education, and historical information to go along with the theme.

If you can’t make the March class, you’ll have more chances to enroll your Jr. Chef in an upcoming class. The Williamson Farmers Market plans to continue presenting these classes throughout the year in different communities. You can find the events posted on the Williamson Farmer’s Market, Healthy in the Hills, and Williamson Health and Wellness Facebook pages.

Suddenly, we’re craving pizza and cake. How about you?
