How to Start an Adventure Guide Business

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

The Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Healthy in the Hills and Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College Entrepreneurship Center to host a free workshop about how to start your own adventure guide business.

Your Guide to Becoming an Adventure Guide is scheduled for Monday, March 29th in room 433 of Southern West Virginia Community College- Williamson Campus. The Williamson Farmers Market staff will provide a light dinner at 5:00pm with the workshop beginning at 5:30pm.

Bryan Shaw, Program Administrator for the Entrepreneurship Center, will lead the workshop.

Last year, 65k trail passes were sold with nearly 50% of those riders making multiple trips throughout the year. Those riders are looking for other things to do when they are visiting.

If you have an interest in starting a kayak rental business, or becoming a fishing guide, or hiking guide, you’ll want to attend this informative guide business workshop. One topic which will be covered is how to be compliant with DNR regulations so that you and your business start off on the right foot.

With the recent success of the Hiking for Health guided group hikes through Williamson Health and Wellness Center's Healthy in the Hills program, an increase in interest in river activities such as kayaking and fishing, and the continuing rise in ATV/SXS/dirt bike tourism happening on the Hatfield McCoy Trails, becoming an adventure guide may prove to be a worthy business venture.

If you’re interested in starting an adventure guide business as a full-time job, or becoming a part-time guide, you’ll want to attend this workshop to find out how to get started.

The workshop and dinner are free, but registration is requested by March 27th. To register, click here: eventbrite registration.
