Traditional Holiday Dishes With a Healthy Twist!

Healthy eating during the Christmas season, is it possible? Yes, it is! The Williamson Farmers Market has some tips and tricks to share with you at the Healthy Holiday Community Cooking Class.

Fresh Herbs vs Essential Oils

Some dishes are tried and true favorites that are found at almost every Christmas dinner. Two of those dishes are potato salad and pasta salad. The Williamson Farmers Market will give these dishes a makeover to bring them to the healthier side for your dinner.

Kristen Deboard, Marketing and Nutrition Manager for Williamson Health and Wellness, explains one dish will have a focus on fresh herbs, while the other will show participants how to use essential oils in cooking. Essential oils consultant, Terri Sheppard will join Kristen during class to discuss the advantages of using essential oils in cooking rather than fresh herbs. Some of the key points Terri will discuss are the health benefits of essential oils in cooking, the longevity of oils compared to the shelf life of fresh herbs, and how much oil should be used in recipes.

“Terri is also a “clean eater”. She and I talk quite a bit about healthy eating. I never used oils to cook with until I started buying an essential oil called thieves. So, I thought this would be an interesting topic for our healthy cooking class,” says Kristen.
